Adopt a dog

Humanimal Balkans works very hard to care for each animal and find loving, lasting homes.

We have been dedicated to providing the best care possible to the animals in our sanctuary/kennels. Our mission is to find loving, responsible forever homes for our dogs/cats.

When you take  one of our animals, you are taking on the responsibility for the rest of his or her lifetime.

Rescue dogs are no different from other dogs: they all need to be exercised and looked after, and loved and cherished.

The difference with rescue dogs is that humans have already let them down at least once. Please do not show interest or adopt one of our dogs unless you are completely committed, prepared to work with them, and that you are  determined that you will not be the human who lets them down again.

Whilst we have a potential adopter going through the process of potential adoption of one of our rescues, once you have chosen a dog you would like to offer a home to, and asked all questions involved regarding that dog, we initially reserve that dog for you. Once you have decided they would definitely like to go ahead with the adoption, once all their questions have been answered and you’re clear on the process and transport costs, we send out a pre-adoption form by e-mail to you, for you to complete and return to us. We would then arrange a home check and vet references if you already have a good relationship with your local vet (if you have resident animals registered with your local vet already, if not no problem we just rely on the home check itself). Once checks are complete and both sides are happy to confirm the adoption within the group. We request a £50 deposit and officially confirm the adoption. This £50 will go towards the dogs transport fees. Continue reading

We don’t ask for any adoption fee whatsoever, but instead ask that our adopters pay the transport costs to get the adoptive dogs over to Uk from the Balkans, wherever possible. This is around £280 – £300 depending on how many dogs are coming over to adoption in one trip. But if any assistance is needed with the costs of transport, we can always try and raise a small portion of that to help any adopter to home one of our dogs. But wherever possiblel the adopter funds the full transport amount themselves. Once deposit has been received and the dog is confirmed to be ready for transport we book their travel space and send the transport group, the £50 deposit to reserve their space. Our transporter is a registered animal transporter, based in the UK and compliant with UK DEFRA for importing animals from abroad. They are a UK group who specialize in Balkan to Europe and  UK transport. The remaining transport fees are due two weeks before transport and can either be sent to us, and our charity (and we’ll forward to our transporter), or can be sent directly to them (being an official Uk registered transporter, sometimes people prefer to pay them direct for peace of mind, but either way is fine for us). The dogs then travel by a specially fitted animal ‘ambulance’ to the UK. It’s basically a van which has been properly modified specifically to transport companion animals across long distances. And is only used for this purpose. When the dogs arrive in the UK, they must spend 48 hours in their registered kennels before they are ‘cleared’ for UK residency. Basically their passports, chips, vaccinations etc are checked by DEFRA employees, and then they can go to their adopters. Kennels are based from the south of England up to the Midlands, they have several kennels dogs can be collected from, or other drop off locations at designated times on the weekend after they arrive. Onward transport direct to your home can also be arranged if you would prefer delivery of your chosen rescue dog too your door, at the cost of fuel only. This is completed by volunteer driver that we can find, and they only charge for petrol/mileage, from the kennels to your home. There are usually 2 transports per month. Before transport all dogs are fully vaccinated (Polyvalent which is for parvovirosis and distemper protection, – double vaccinated for the best protection and also for rabies). They will also receive intensive flea and worm treatment. These are pre requisites of travel and no dog can enter the UK without having had these. We also give our dogs a kennel cough vaccination, test for heartworm, and titer tests to complete their travel documentation, and a vet check up for fitness to travel. All dogs are spayed/neutered unless too young (when it would be the adopters responsibility as soon as they are old enough and form part of the adoption agreement). One thing we must stress is that some of our dogs have been rescued from absolutely horrific circumstances, from barbaric torturous kill shelters, or from abandonment on the streets. They suffered starvation, water deprivation and abuse from the staff who run the kill shelters. Our group nurtured them back to full health and restored their faith in human beings, and they are now such a lovely dogs. Our group is always available for help, advice or support with the dogs that we home, but we must stress that we do not have UK kennels that dogs can be removed into if something goes wrong. This is why its so vital we are absolutely transparent and truthful about any dogs personality. We have to get this right. If a dog has any issues we try to secure a designated fosterer to act as their back up before they leave, but we also have several fosterers who step up specifically for emergency cases. You are also more than welcome to chat with some of our UK or European  adopters about their own experiences etc.  The vast majority of our adopters are active members in our group  – Help Pozega Dogs Group (on facebook) and  are a good source for information and can provide testimonials of their experiences if you would like to talk to them.  If you would like any further information at all please don’t hesitate to come back to us for further information.

teddyA message to anyone considering adopting a dog from this page. I am involved in a UK based breed specific rescue and so have quite a bit of experience with rescue dogs. When we have the space we have occasionally helped with dogs from Pozega and found them a home, hopefully taking a little bit of pressure off this group. I know it is really difficult to agree to offer a home to a dog that you have never met, you are placing a lot of trust in the rescue to be honest but our experience is that everything we were told about the dogs by this group was the truth. All were fit, happy and healthy on arrival, they were well transported and all information we had received about their health, age and personalities was correct. All dogs (except for Teddy 🙁 see below) went on to find fabulous new homes and other than the usual settling in period that you would expect from any rescue dog they have all been delightful in their new homes. Go on take the plunge. you won’t regret it xx The gorgeous Teddy was a very old boy who sadly became ill and died before we could find him a home. Again though the group were honest about him, we knew his age when he came and this is something that could/would have happened whether he had been a UK dog or in a home etc. Unfortunately old age comes to dogs far too soon.
